Énergir and Hydro-Québec join forces for a more sustainable future

Did you know that Énergir and Hydro-Québec have forged a one-of-a-kind partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help Québec meet its decarbonization targets?

Signed in July 2021, this agreement led to the development of a dual-energy offer, a joint initiative between Énergir, Hydro-Québec and the Québec government. Since 2022, this product has allowed people with natural gas heating systems to replace their units with a dual-energy system that uses electricity as the primary energy source and switches to natural gas during peak use (during very cold weather, for example).

The right energy, at the right time, and at the best cost

It’s important to note that we experience peak periods in the winter. A peak period occurs when many customers use heating systems and other energy-consuming devices at the same time. Using natural gas during these periods avoids overloading the electricity grid and saves money.

Other benefits of dual energy include:

  • It allows its users to effectively reduce their GHG emissions by using electricity, a renewable source of energy produced largely in Canada.
  • It lowers annual energy costs compared to 100% natural gas heating.
  • It allows Quebec society to save money by limiting the need to build new hydroelectric dams.

Making a difference, one act at a time

On a larger scale, this partnership brings us one step closer to decarbonization. By 2030, it’s expected to prevent 540,000 tonnes of GHG emissions, the equivalent of 125,000 fewer cars on our roads.

Goal 2030

The partnership between Énergir and Hydro-Québec is also a very real way to contribute to the Québec government’s Plan for a Green Economy, which targets a 37.5% reduction in GHG emissions from 1990 levels by 2030. This is therefore a sustainable, concrete solution that allows us to act now to fight climate change, while minimizing the impact on the environment and society.
